Social welfare Ireland: Exact dates for once off extra cost of living payments this month

Thousands of people living in Ireland are in store for a nice cash boost this month, with several once-off payments on the cards which were announced in Budget 2023 to help ease the cost of living crisis.

These welcome payments will come in the form of the Living Alone Increase, Fuel Allowance, Working Family Payment, Disability Allowance, Invalidity Pension, Blind Pension, and the Carer's Support Grant. Last week, thousands of households were delighted to receive the promised double child benefit payment on November 1.

Now there's still plenty of other payments on the way which are sure to greatly benefit many people heading into the upcoming Christmas season. Here's the exact dates of the remaining once off extra social welfare payments for November 2022.

Living Alone Increase: €200 week starting November 14

The Living Alone Increase is an extra payment for people on social welfare payments who are living alone. In Budget 2023, it was announced that people receiving the Living Alone Increase will get a once-off payment of €200 the week starting 14 November 2022.

To get this payment you must be living entirely on your own. Although, there are some exceptions for those living in an extension of a relative's home like a granny flat, and you can qualify for the increase if you can show that you have facilities to cook and eat alone as well as your own living/dining and sleeping accommodation.

Fuel Allowance: €400 week starting November 14

People getting the Fuel Allowance payment are due to receive a once off payment of €400 the week starting November 14. People aged 70 and over will qualify for Fuel Allowance as long as their weekly means (which includes their State Pension) is not above €500 per week for a single person and €1,000 per week for a couple in January 2023.

For people aged under 70, weekly allowable means above the applicable State Pension (Contributory) rate will increase by €80 from €120 to €200 in January 2023. Meanwhile, Disablement Benefit and half-rate Carer’s Allowance will be disregarded in the means test for Fuel Allowance in January 2023.

Working Family Payment: €500 week starting November 14

People who are getting the Working Family Payment (WFP) are due to receive a €500 once off payment the week starting November 14. The Working Family Payment is a weekly tax-free payment for employees with children, and it especially supports those who are on low pay.

To get the Working Family Payment, you must have at least one child who normally lives with you or who you support financially. Your child must be under 18 (or between 18 and 22 if they are in full-time day education) for you to get this payment.

Disability Allowance: €500 week starting November 14

People who get Disability Allowance will get a once-off payment of €500 the week starting 14 November 2022. Disability Allowance (DA) is a weekly allowance paid to people with a disability, and you can get it from 16 years of age even if you are in school.

From January 2023, the maximum rate of Disability Allowance will increase by €12 with increases for people on reduced rates of payment. For example, the weekly rate for a child will rise to €42 for children under 12 years of age, and it will increase to €50 for children aged 12 years and over. The earnings limit on Disability Allowance are also set to increase by €25 from €140 to €165 in January 2023.

Invalidity Pension: €500 week starting November 14

Those on the Invalidity Pension are set to receive a €500 once off payment the week starting November 14. Invalidity Pension is a weekly payment to people who cannot work because of a long-term illness or disability and who are covered by social insurance also called PRSI.

Blind Pension: €500 week starting November 14

The Blind Pension is a means-tested payment paid to blind and visually impaired people who are are a resident living in Ireland, and people getting this payment will be paid €500 the week starting November 14. To qualify for the Pension, you must provide an eye test from an opthalmic surgeon to verify your visual impairment.

Carer’s Support Grant: €500 week starting November 21

In Budget 2023 it was confirmed that carers who qualify for the Carer’s Support Grant will get a once-off payment of €500 the week starting 21 November 2022. You will get one payment of €500 only, even if you are caring for more than one person.

For those struggling amid the cost of living crisis, more social welfare once-off payments are also expected in the New Year. On Budget Day, Minister Heather Humphreys said: “This government has always responded to the challenges that people have faced and we’ll continue to, come the New Year."
