Social Welfare Ireland: Bank holiday surprise for Social Welfare recipients amid early payment

Over a million Social Welfare recipients received a welcome early payment today due to the June Bank Holiday weekend.

While people normally receive their social welfare payments on a set day each week, this changed due to the Bank Holiday Monday falling on June 5.

Post offices and banks won’t be open on that day so Social Welfare payment were sent out early as a result, meaning a welcome pre-weekend bump for recipients.

People expecting to get their payment on Monday received it today, Friday, June 2, instead.

The Department of Social Protection explained in a statement: "Monday 5 June is a Bank Holiday and as a result most social welfare payments due to be paid on Monday 5 June, will now be paid on Friday 2 June instead.

"All Intreo Centres and Branch Offices will be closed Monday 5 June due to the Bank Holiday. Intreo Centres and Branch Offices will re-open on Tuesday 6 June."

Parents and legal guardians who qualify for Child Benefit payments will also be paid earlier.

Recipients usually are paid on the first Tuesday of every month, but due to the June Bank Holiday they will get it today or tomorrow.

This will include a €100 bonus which was announced earlier this year as part of the government’s spring cost of living package.

It was confirmed that this is a once-off payment to help with the cost of living and is not a permanent increase.

Child Benefit is a monthly payment to the parents or guardians of children under 16 years of age. You can get Child Benefit for children aged 16 and 17, if they are in full-time education or full-time training or have a disability and cannot support themselves.

Child Benefit is not paid for any child aged 18 or older, even if they are in full-time education or training.
