Social Security Payment Schedule for 2025

Red mark on the calendar at January 2025.

When you receive your 2025 Social Security payment is determined, with a few exceptions, by your date of birth. However, if you received Social Security before May 1997 or are receiving both Social Security & SSI, Social Security is paid on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st. If your payment date falls on a federal holiday or weekend, you can expect to receive that month’s payment on the weekday immediately prior.

Retired public sector employees can expect to receive a payment(s) to reflect the retroactive application of the Social Security Fairness Act to benefits paid after December 31, 2023. There is currently no specific information about how or when these retroactive payments will be made. In 2025, eligible retirees can expect to see an estimated average increase of $360 per month, but actual amounts will vary based on your employment history. Spouses, widows, and widowers will also no longer see reductions in survivor benefits due to the Government Pension Offset.

What will the average monthly social security check be in 2025?

The official COLA increase for 2025 is 2.5%, and it mirrors the last forecast by Kiplinger economist David Payne.

In December 2024, the average Social Security monthly check for all retirement beneficiaries was $1,925.66, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). If you are interested in knowing more about SS benefit payments and how your check measures up to peers, take a look at what the average Social Security check is by age.
