A match between LAFC and LA Galaxy originally scheduled for Saturday has been postponed until July 4 after bad weather and forecast thunderstorms in the Los Angeles area prompted safety concerns, Major League Soccer said on Friday.
The latest installment of the "El Trafico" derby was supposed to serve as the season opener for both clubs and was expected to draw an MLS-record 75,000 fans to the Rose Bowl to see reigning champions LAFC take on their cross-town rivals.
But MLS was forced to announce the postponement after a slow-moving winter storm intensified over California on Friday, triggering the first blizzard warning in parts of the Los Angeles area in 30 years.
The storm was expected to linger over California through Saturday, the National Weather Service said.
MLS will look to set an attendance record when the match is held under the lights at the historic venue in Pasadena on Tuesday, July 4, the Independence Day holiday in the United States.
