Soccer fans had so many jokes about Kylian Mbappe joining Real Madrid after it won the Champions League

According to Fabrizio Romano, French superstar Kylian Mbappe officially finalized his transfer documents to soon join Real Madrid on Sunday. The club will apparently announce his addition formally sometime later this upcoming week.

Honestly? The timing couldn’t have been more hilarious.

That’s because, on Saturday, Real Madrid won the Champions League. You know, one of the biggest championships in all of soccer. Period. It is the club’s second Champions League title in three years, and it’s the 15th time it’s won overall — by far the most of any other club.

It stands to reason that Real Madrid doesn’t actually need Mbappe to keep winning at the highest level. But the rich are getting richer anyway. Why?

Because they can:

Nothing about this transfer is inherently illegal. Real Madrid hasn’t circumvented anything. It’s simply a matter of an all-time star near the peak of his powers joining the best club in the world — which has happened before in men’s soccer and in other sports and leagues. (Hello, Kevin Durant on the Golden State Warriors!)

We can argue the merits of that point, but it’s an entirely different conversation.

Ultimately, it’s so amusing that someone as great as Mbappe is joining Real Madrid right after they ascended the mountaintop. You couldn’t write a funnier script about the obvious power imbalance in this sport.
