Iconic TV programme Soccer AM is set to be axed after a 28-year spell as a result of poor television ratings, reports claim.
Having been a staple of any fans' match day since the beginning of the Premier League era, iconic hosts such as Tim Lovejoy, Helen Chamberlain, Max Rushden and Jimmy Bullard have all tried their hand at presenting the hit morning show, with Bullard and John 'Fenners' Fendley being the current hosts.
But with the rise of other shows and dwindling ratings, Sky bosses have now come down hard on the hit programme - with The Sun claiming that the legendary showing will see out its remaining 10 episodes for the season before removing itself from the start of next season's football calendar. Staff at the studios in West London were apparently told on Tuesday morning that the programme would be ending in the late stretches of May - with redundancies also in place once the season is over.
A source said: "It was a complete bombshell. Morale is at an all-time low, they are raging.
"It's going to be an interesting watch over the next few weeks."
Having first aired in 1995, Soccer AM enjoyed considerable success with the likes of the Dance Off, footballing drills such as ProAM, Crossbar Challenge, Skill Skool and hilarious comedy sketches such as Hairy Strikers, Away Days with Frankie Fryer and more.
The show, which runs for 90 minutes, goes through the week's results and fixtures whilst also bringing on entertaining guests to sit on the panel for in-depth interviews, ranging from current professionals and celebrities.
A Sky spokesperson said: “Soccer AM has played an important role in our coverage of football for the past three decades, and we continually adapt to the evolving needs of our customers.
"We now go into a period of consultation to discuss the proposed changes with our people. We are unable to provide more detail while these consultations are underway.”
It is thought that Saturday Social will instead take the 10:30am slot that Soccer AM has adorned screens for years ahead of build-up to Saturdays in the next campaign.
