Sober dating trend can help you form 'better connections' and save you cash, says expert

With dating apps dominating our love life and the tendency to get stuck in the 'talking stage', singletons are looking for new ways to stand out from the crowd and find love.

Many have turned to sober dating as a result of this – ditching drinks in a bar in favour of coffee shops, possibly as a result of Gen Z's increasing sobriety.

Increased consciousness around health, wellness and general safety means more and more are choosing to be sober on a first date – and dating expert Pippa Murphy believes this could actually help you make "better connections" and find the one.

"As more people recognise the benefits of sobriety and seek out ways to connect with others who share their values, the demand for sober dating options is likely to continue to grow – especially as we head into spring and summer and people go on more first dates," said the relationships expert for condoms.uk.

Despite the appeal of alcohol to calm nerves, drinking on a first date could "impair communication" which may lead to a "misunderstanding", making the date even more awkward.

Pippa said: "If both people are sober, you're more likely to choose good decisions and stay clear of any red-flag topics for a first date, such as talking about politics or exes.

"When people are sober, they are more likely to be themselves and show their true personality, which can lead to a more authentic and meaningful connection between you both. Whilst seeing them for who they are may result in you realising that they're not your type, you'll at least not have any regrets about spending time together as you'll have given it your all, and vice versa."

Dating platforms often have the option to display whether or not you are sober, which can help you see if someone has the same values and interests as you. If your match is insisting on drinks for the first date, despite your sober sign, this is one red flag not to be avoided.

"Without alcohol, both you and your date are more likely to be present and focused on the conversation, as well as the experience of getting to know each other," Pippa added. "This means increased clarity and focus – which will make it easier for you to form an opinion on whether you'd like to see the person again, or not."

If you're still heading for a coffee or even to a bar for non-alcoholic drinks, this is usually cheaper than a date with booze. You might only spend £4 on a drink rather than having a £10 cocktail.

Taking alcohol out the equation also forces you to be more inventive with your date ideas. Head outside of a bar and dig into dates that are more creative to see if you have shared hobbies. A walk in the local park or a hike is great for a free adventure.

If money isn't a problem, Pippa recommends going bowling or roller-skating for an energetic date that "helps you forget about any nerves", she added: "If your date isn't very good at skating, well ... you can hold hands."

With Gen Z's push for more sobriety and many daters getting bored with trips to the bar, a sober date could be exactly what you need to reignite your love life.

Pippa added: "Laughing together is always a good sign for chemistry," so do something that makes you and your date smile.
