As egg prices rise, Americans are turning to more affordable alternatives to the traditional Easter egg painting.

Egg prices hit a record high of $4.95 in January. To avoid the cost this Easter, families are instead dipping potatoes in food coloring and painting the vegetable's skin as a holiday alternative and sharing their results on TikTok.

TikTok user calliechalks turned her potato in an homage to "Wicked." She painted Ariana Grande's Glinda and Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba, complete with a tiara and pair of glasses.

While painting a potato pink, another TikTok user with text overlay reiterating that "eggs are way too expensive" to paint this Easter.

A video by TikTok user jenniferraelbert showed two young children dipping their potatoes in food coloring.

"POV: Easter traditions are looking a little different this year 🥔," the video's text read.
