AN SNP MSP and former minister has announced she is stepping down at the next Holyrood election.
Elena Whitham, MSP for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley and former drugs and alcohol minister, said in a post on social media that “after much soul searching and discussion with my loved ones”, she made the “difficult decision” not to run for Holyrood again.
Elected as an MSP in 2021, Whitham (below) was drugs and alcohol minister under then-first minister Humza Yousaf. She left the role in February, citing post-traumatic stress disorder.
In a statement on Monday, Whitham said: “It has been the privilege of my life to serve the people of Carrick, Cumnock, and Doon Valley as MSP for the past three and a half years.
“It was also an immense honour to work on my passion for social justice across two ministerial roles. I will be forever proud of what I have achieved with the help and support of my constituents.
“After much soul searching and discussion with my loved ones, I have decided that I will not be seeking re-selection for the next Holyrood election. This was a difficult decision to make but one I know is right for me and my family.
“I will continue to give my all to work for the people of Carrick, Cumnock, and Doon Valley for the next 18 months with the support of my amazing team.
“I will always believe that a better future lies ahead for Scotland as an independent nation. Whoever succeeds me as candidate will have my full support as we continue with our mission.”

Responding, former SNP MP Alison Thewliss said: “I'm really sorry to hear this - you've done great work as an MSP and as a Minister.”
Former SNP MP Stewart McDonald said: “Best wishes to you, Elena.”
Scottish Labour MSP Carol Mochan said: “Best of luck Elena, I know that must have been a difficult decision.”
