An SNP MP urged the Tory Government to find a “resolution” to concerns about Holyrood’s controversial gender recognition Bill.
Dr Lisa Cameron personally wrote to Scottish Secretary Alister Jack on the day he blocked the legislation from receiving Royal Assent.
This was despite her own party leader Nicola Sturgeon later accusing the UK Government of launching a "direct attack " on the Scottish Parliament.
The Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill, which makes it easier for trans people to change gender, was passed by MSPs in December.
But on January 17th Jack blocked the Bill from coming into force amid fears women and girls could be at threat.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon derided the intervention as a “profound mistake” and claimed the Tories were waging a culture war.
On the same day as Jack confirmed the block, Cameron wrote to Jack:
“I have been asked to write to you by a number of my constituents who are concerned regarding the impact of gender-self ID on equality rights for women in Scotland and across the UK. They wish the UK Government to intervene to prevent this.”
The East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow MP added: “This is an extremely sensitive matter, and I would be hopeful that a resolution can be found that addresses my constituents’ concerns whilst not undermining the devolution settlement.”
Labour’s Shadow Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said Cameron’s letter was “humiliating” for the SNP.
He said: “Leadership challenges, chief whip resignations and scandal after scandal - every day that goes by, it seems the SNP are more interested in standing up against each other than standing up for Scotland.
“The UK and Scottish governments should be getting around a table to resolve this issue.”
An SNP source said: "SNP MPs should be focused on defending the Scottish Parliament from the latest attack by the UK Government, not egging on Alister Jack as he oversteps the mark."
Although MSPs comfortably passed the legislation in December, divisions exist within the SNP, Labour and the Tories.
Nine SNP MSPs voted against the Bill at its final parliamentary stage.
