SNP leadership hopeful defends private school decision by saying she is a 'mother first'

An SNP leadership contender has defended her decision to send her children to an elite, fee-paying private school.

Ash Regan said: “I am a mother first and a politician second.”

The Edinburgh Eastern MSP is going up against Health Secretary Humza Yousaf and Finance Secretary Kate Forbes in the race to succeed Nicola Sturgeon.

At her campaign launch in North Queensferry, Regan called on Sturgeon’s husband Peter Murrell to quit as party chief executive and repeated her plan to scrap gender reform legislation.

However, she was also asked by the Record about her decision before she entered politics to use a private school for her children.

She said: “I want to refocus on the priorities of the Scottish people. Education absolutely would be one of those. I made the decision about my family circumstances before I got into politics.

“I am a mother first and a politician second, and I expect everybody to respect that as I would respect their choices for their families.”

At the time the original story broke in 2015, she was working as a lobbyist for the left-wing Common Weal, whose slogan was All Of Us First.
