SNP deliver record funding for Scottish Trauma Network, latest figures show

THE SNP are delivering record funding for the Scottish Trauma Network, according to the latest figures.

The Scottish Trauma Network (STN) is used to help optimise the health and wellbeing of the seriously injured which involves both the Scottish Ambulance Service and hospitals across the country.

This includes four major trauma centres which deliver specialty care to severely injured patients.

Last year the STN received a record £40,757,845 of funding from the Scottish Government to support trauma centres and those recovering from severe accidents and injuries.

The figures from 2021/22 show that just over £36.5 million was given to the STN while in 2017-18 the figure sat at around just £4m.

Commenting, MSP and registered nurse Emma Harper said: “I welcome these statistics that show 69% of trauma patients are able to return to work after their injuries – this is testament to the hard work of our NHS trauma practitioners and the quality of our trauma centres and the services they deliver.

“Severe injuries can turn people’s lives upside down: putting pressure on their relationships, their finances and their mental health.

“It is vital that trauma patients are not left to languish after their initial treatment and can be supported back to work into their communities as quickly as possible.”

The latest Scottish Trauma Audit Group’s report meanwhile revealed that cases of severe disability had also decreased in the last year from 27.9% of patients in 2018-2021 to 22.3% in 2021/22.

Harper added: “These figures show why this SNP government’s substantial investment in the Scottish Trauma Network is so important – giving patients their lives back and making sure they have the right support to have the best recovery available to them.”
