SNP councillor quits Edinburgh City Council to take up role with Scottish Government

AN SNP councillor in Edinburgh has resigned to take up a new position with the Scottish Government.

Marco Biagi, who served the Colinton/Fairmilehead ward, announced the news on Tuesday.

It comes after Scottish Labour lost a seat in the same ward to the Scottish Liberal Democrats last week.

SNP group leader on the City of Edinburgh Council Simita Kumar said: “Cllr Marco Biagi has made a decision to step down from the council to take up a new position with the Scottish Government.

“While I am sad by Marco’s departure from the SNP group in Edinburgh, I am equally thrilled for him as he embarks on this new chapter.”

Biagi previously served as the MSP for Edinburgh Central from 2014 to 2016 and was minister for local government and community empowerment under Nicola Sturgeon.

Kumar added: “Marco has been an integral part of team SNP, offering unwavering support and dedication, not just to the group but to me personally.

“Hi contributions have left a lasting impact, and he will be greatly missed.”

Kumar further acknowledged the “frustration” the news may bring to residents given a by-election took place just last week.

“Marco has always prioritised his constituents, and I know he would have adjusted the timing if it were possible,” she said.

“Your voice remains crucial to us, and I want to reassure you that we are committed to ensuring you continue to have strong representation in the council.”
