Snowfall causes chaos at Mersey Tunnels during morning rush hour

The snowy weather has caused chaos at the Mersey Tunnels this morning.

Drivers reported large delays and problems with others having their fast tags taken by staff at the tunnel entrances. Merseytravel said the snow is causing issues including the ability for technology to read number plates on some vehicles.

Snow is now coming down quite heavily across Merseyside and has caused a number of transport issues. Earlier today Merseytravel tweeted to say: "Due to the current snowfall, there are issues with traffic entering and exiting the Toll Booths on the Wirral approach roads to both tunnels. Please allow extra time for your journey and drive safely."

One person told the ECHO she had her fast tag taken off her by staff at the toll booths and said she saw staff trying to manually scan vehicles to get them through. Others had to pay the toll despite having a fast tag.

On twitter, Mark L said: "Chaos in the Mersey Tunnels this morning. Any explanation as to why Fast Tags have stopped working today and being physically taken from drivers forcing them to register for T-Flow now?"

A spokesperson for Merseytravel said: "There's some congestion at the tunnels due to sheer volumes of traffic this morning which is no doubt weather related. The weather is also making it more difficult to read the number plates on some vehicles but our teams are helping customers travel through the plaza as quickly as possible."

Elsewhere, Merseyrail services remain on track but customers are being advised to check before they travel. You can follow our live blog for updates on the weather today.
