Snow map shows Arctic weather sweep across UK bringing -15C chill

Watch the exact moment weather maps show snow and sleet sweeping across the UK as an arctic blast hits.

Britain is currently in the grips of a bloc of freezing air that has swept down from the north, bringing the coldest night of the year despite the onset of spring.

Much of the country has been blanketed with snow and faced treacherous icy conditions.

The Met Office has issued a number of yellow weather warnings across the entire week, warning of disruption and more.

But a newly released weather map shows the exact moment much of the UK was hit badly by snow and sleet as a harsh weather system swept across the country.

The blizzard began as rain, racing in from across the Atlantic Ocean, hitting parts of northern France as it brought frosty conditions to southern Ireland.

Parts of the south-east of England and west Wales caught the tail-end of the rain late last night before it turned into snow overnight, including hail and sleet, through into this morning.

It was the coldest night of the year so far in the UK as temperatures plummeted to -15.2C at Kinbrace in the Scottish Highlands.

It left many Brits waking up to their homes covered in the white stuff as they faced cold commutes into work.

Snow covered swathes of the south-west, south-east and parts of Wales as London was hit hard too.

It stretched into the midlands and east England as it threatened to continue throughout the day.

The disruptive snow is a result of a battle between Arctic air from the north and milder air coming in from the Atlantic from the south.

Where the two blocs of air meet, they are causing flurries of snow and sleet, and even hail in places, the Met Office warned.

Today, this is most likely to be targeted more towards south and central England, and Wales, but towards the end of the week it will move northwards.

Earlier this week there was some dispute as two major weather models disagreed about whether the snow would hit the UK.

The BBC reported that the European model had the mixing blocs of air producing the snow over the south and central England - as has happened.

But the American model predicted snow and sleet would be pushed lower and hit parts of France instead.

Last night was confirmed as the coldest night of the year so far as temperatures plummeted to -15.2C at Kinbrace, in the Highlands.

A number of schools and nurseries have been shut today due to the adverse conditions, as the Met Office have said more weather warnings are "very likely".
