Snow map covering Scotland names 26 areas to be blasted by flurries and ice

Scots should brace for another chilly blast as temperatures are predicted to fall as low as -12C overnight this week.

The Met Office has three weather warnings in place for snow and ice across 26 areas of Scotland until Thursday afternoon. Snow, which could reach 10cm in elevated areas, will be accompanied by rain, sleet and ice that will likely impact travellers both on the road and public transport.

Another snow and ice alert is to begin on Wednesday at 4pm, lasting until 4am Thursday morning. Forecasters have said several centimetres of snow is expected to fall "especially" in Scotland. This is set to turn into rain in the early hours of the next morning, with milder conditions for most of the British Isles to follow.

Weather maps show more Arctic winds moving from the far north, bringing snowfall towards the southwest then over the rest of the UK.

Met Office forecaster Luke Miall said snow showers will continue to affect north and west Scotland until Tuesday morning. He said: "As we start our day on Tuesday, it's going to be a particularly cold start to the day for many places, particularly across the northern two thirds of the UK.

"We've got those sunny skies and that frost and ice on the ground, we continue to see wintry showers affecting many northern and western areas."

The forecaster added that most of the UK will experience sub-zero temperatures, with the far north experiencing a chilling -6C this afternoon. This will continue to drop overnight and is expected to hit as low as -12C by Wednesday morning.

The prospect of wintry showers and partially melted snow freezing on untreated surfaces and turning them into icy stretches has been raised for people in Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England and North Wales.

The Met Office said: “Cold air spreading southwards across the UK, following a band of rain, sleet and snow, will bring frequent snow showers to northern, western, and eastern Scotland, as well as parts of Northern Ireland.

“Overnight, these will accumulate on some roads and pavements, with anywhere between a light dusting and several centimetres of snow possible. Between the showers, partially melted snow is likely to freeze on untreated surfaces leading to icy stretches.

“Wintry showers will continue through Tuesday, although by mid-morning the temperature on most roads will likely have risen sufficiently to reduce the risk of further accumulating snow or ice.”

Yellow weather warning for snow in Scotland

The Met Office has issued a new weather warning for snow and ice in Scotland that is set to begin tomorrow afternoon, lasting overnight until early Thursday morning.

The forecast says: "Spells of snow are expected to develop Wednesday late afternoon and early evening, mainly in areas above 100 to 200 m. Later on Wednesday evening and during Thursday early hours this snow will then turn to rain as milder weather conditions spread across the British Isles.

"Meanwhile, below 100 to 200 m, snow may fall briefly during the late afternoon and early evening before turning to rain. Snow accumulations will be mainly in areas above 200 to 300 m with several centimetres of snow falling in some places, especially in Scotland, and above 400 m more than 10 cm of snow is possible in places."
