Snow joke: Temperatures fall below -30 C in Hokkaido

RIKUBETSU, Hokkaido -- The temperature in the Hokkaido town of Rikubetsu, which it is claimed is the coldest town in Japan, fell to minus 31.8 C at 6:18 a.m. on Saturday, the lowest temperature recorded in the nation this winter.

At around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, people at the Aurora Town 93 roadside station in the town took photos in front of a thermometer indicating the temperature was minus 30 C.
