Snow forecast across the UK this week - everywhere that could see up to 17cm of snow

Parts of the UK could see up to 17cm of snow this week as temperatures are set to plummet across some regions.

Heavy rain battered the country on Wednesday, prompting dozens of flood warnings as the Met Office said there could be possible power cuts and damage to buildings.

"Persistent heavy rain" is set to hit parts of Wales and Southwest England tonight through to Thursday.

But the weather is then predicted to take an icy turn for some parts of the UK from Thursday and through to next week.

The north of Scotland is set to be hit by the most amount of snow, according to Snow Forecast's weather map for snow conditions in the UK.

The Glencoe Mountain resort could see 2cm of snow tomorrow, followed by a massive 17cm of snowfall on Thursday as temperatures are set to reach a frosty -6 degrees Celsius.

A further 8cm of snow is estimated to fall in the region on Friday night.

The Nevis Range is also predicted to see a whopping 16cm of snowfall on Thursday, with temperatures there plummeting to -6 degrees later in the week.

On Saturday the Sottish mountain range of Cairngorm is expected to receive 15cm of snow.

7cm of snow is predicted for Glenshee tomorrow, as well as another 10cm expected in the region on Saturday, followed by 10cm more on Monday.

Cumbria is also expected to see snow, with 6cm predicted to fall on the Lake District on Saturday and another 12cm on Monday.

Monday is also predicted to be a snowy day for Snowdonia in Wales, which could see up to 14cm of snow.

Meanwhile, the Pennines could see 8cm of snow on Saturday.

The Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for rain covering a large region in the South West of the UK, but warned that temperatures were likely to plummet next week.

Meteorologist and Presenter Aidan McGivern said: “Next week, the jet stream is a bit more amplified and it’s coming at the UK from the northwest rather than from the west like recent days.

"This subtle change into the start of next week will see colder weather coming in and rather than prolonged bouts of rain from the west, we’re likely to see rain and showers coming from the northwest".

The cooler temperatures could bring snow to several areas of the UK.

Mr McGivern added: “These showers from the north could fall as snow over the high parts of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland later in the weekend, and as we move through next week often below average temperatures could support a mixture of rain, hail sleet and snow. Most of any snow accumulation is likely over higher parts of the northern UK."

He said that the greatest chances of snow will be across northern parts of the UK and in central areas, mostly over the hills.
