Snooker fans were left in hysterics after "murdered" John Higgins appeared to fall asleep during the World Championship.

The footage taken at the Betred World Championship went viral after freelance writer Huw Davies posted it on Twitter with the caption: “Are we just going to ignore that somebody’s murdered John Higgins?”

The Scottish snooker player was taking on Australian Neil Robertson at the competition at The Crucible in Sheffield on Wednesday.

Whilst the camera focussed in on his opponent taking on a shot, Higgins could be seen in the background of the video sitting still with his head thrown back as if asleep.

The 43-year-old was actually looking into the camera screen above his head to watch Robertson’s shot.

In a press conference after the match he confirmed that he was not asleep: “I was checking the angle of the shot on the screen above.”

Higgins knocked his Aussie opponent out of the competition by winning with a score of 13-10 but not before viewers noticed his sleepy appearance in the background.

Twitter users quickly joined the fun (PA)

Twitter users quickly jumped in to comment on the hilarious post, which has racked up more than 32,000 likes and 8,700 retweets.

Commenters wrote: “When snooker dries up, he has acting to turn to” and “This is one of those tweets that throws me into fits of laughter.”

Another wrote: “When Neil said he’d do anything to win, we didn’t expect him to...”

Iian Black commented on the tweet saying: “I just snorted, hooted with laughter in an entirely empty office and stomped around the room unable to contain myself.”
