SUMMARY: Tim Southee sent in Australia on a green-tinged Wellington pitch that Pat Cummins admitted he would have done the same. Openers Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja hung tough but the Kiwi bowlers - led by Matt Henry - broke through either side of lunch, taking 4-28. Enter Cam Green and Mitch Marsh. Marsh upped a sluggish run rate with a quickfire 40 and Green kicked on, reaching just his second Test century in the last over of the day. Still, New Zealand's all-pace attack held sway for long periods, with Henry finishing with 4-43 and Will O'Rourke and Scott Kuggeleijn taking two wickets each.
PLAYER OF THE MOMENT: Cam Green. Entering the contest at 4-89, Australia looked every chance of suffering an opening-day routing until the 24-year-old found poise on a difficult wicket where others struggled.
STAT OF THE DAY: Green's second 50 came off just 46 balls, the towering allrounder crashing three balls in the final over to the boundary to get out of the nervous 90s and celebrate a century.
