Snapdragon Sound Redefines Wireless Listening With Two New Audio Platforms

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Sound platforms will move the wireless earphone market forwards into a new era. getty

Qualcomm has spent a lot of time since acquiring the IP for Bluetooth from Queens University, Belfast. In that time, it’s forged ahead with TWS and that development has powered the boom in the market for true wireless earbuds. The company is innovating at an incredible pace and intends to shape wireless sound for music, calls and gaming in the coming years.

Today, Qualcomm announced two new ultra- low power wireless audio platforms packed with useful features that will delight consumers. The Qualcomm QCC517x and Qualcomm QCC307x both support Snapdragon Sound technology. The platforms are optimized for dual-mode transmission by combining traditional Bluetooth wireless audio with the latest LE Audio technology standard.

James Chapman is vice president and general manager of Voice, Music & Wearables at Qualcomm. He says: “Utilizing Snapdragon 8, FastConnect 6900 and Snapdragon Sound we can deliver the ultimate wireless sound experience. For example, in addition to being the first to deliver Lossless audio, we’ve added ultra-low latency gaming mode with in-game chat, and the ability for earbuds to record content in stereo sound which will add huge value for a new generation of creators.

“In these tiny platforms, we integrated our Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation in a dedicated hardware block, and as a result are bringing substantial noise cancellation improvements, to whatever is in a listener’s earbud.”

Qualcomm is releasing new technology that will change the wireless earphone market. Qualcomm

The two new platforms offer audio OEMs much more flexibility for customizing their products and can pick from a range of feature tiers, unlocking new opportunities for feature-packed audio devices that support Snapdragon Sound technology with 16-bit 44.1kHz CD Lossless Bluetooth audio quality, 24-bit 96kHz high-resolution Bluetooth audio quality, plus 32kHz super wideband voice call quality for even clearer phone calls.

Another exciting feature is audio recording for creators, enabling content with stereo sound. The systems offer robust connectivity even in areas where there is a congested RF spectrum. Also included is a gaming mode, with 68ms low latency audio and voice back channel. This represents a 25% improvement on the previous platform.

Qualcomm is also offering dual-mode, low-power, optimized integration of LE Audio for audio sharing and broadcasting applications. Multipoint Bluetooth wireless connectivity provides almost seamless and convenient transitions between source devices. Finally, Qualcomm’s third-generation Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation feature is included with natural hear-thru capability.

Qualcomm claims its new and enhanced platform architecture can achieve double the computing capability compared to its previous generation of wireless audio platforms and without any compromise to ultra-low-power performance.

Pricing & Availability: Qualcomm QCC517x and Qualcomm QCC307x platforms are sampling with Qualcomm’s customers now and commercial products are expected to reach the market in the second half of 2022.
