Snapchat dog scanner can identify a pooch's breed with just a photo — here’s how to use it

We’ve all been there, when we’re out on a walk and see an adorable dog and want to know what the breed is, but feel nervous asking the owner. Now, you can whip out your smartphone and find out a dog’s breed with Snapchat.

At the company’s recent Partner Summit, Snap revealed new smart features coming to the app’s camera function, including a new Scan feature. If you open up the app, and “press and hold” on the camera screen, helpful Lenses will unlock based on what the camera sees in front of it.

The Dog Scanner function means the camera is now able to recognise almost 400 breeds, whilst PlantSnap can identify 90 per cent of plants and trees.

According to Carolina Arguellas, product marketing for Camera at Snap, you can even turn the feature on yourself to find out what dog you most resemble, akin to an Instagram filter. “I’m a Corgi and proud — short, stout, and very regal,” she said.

Snap’s camera isn’t the only smart camera that allows you to work out what breed a dog is.

Google’s Lens technology, which brings cool AI features to your smartphone camera, also allows you to snap a shot of a dog before drawing on Google Search to identify the breed and tell you a little more about the history of the pooch.

Snapchat has a host of new features coming to its camera as part of Scan. Look out for integration later this year with the app Yuka which will allow you to scan a packaged food item and see a rating on the quality of the ingredients.

Brands are also going to be getting in on the action, with Louis Vuitton one of the first ones to sign up. Soon you will be able to scan the LV monogram to get an inside look at the inspiration behind the new collection.

Happy scanning.
