Smriti Kalra: The concept of treading the path less travelled is embedded in my subconscious mind

Not the one with a formulaic approach, Smriti Kalra has been drawn towards unusual characters. Be it the innocent Neha in Itti Si Khushi or Ahana in Dil Sambhal Jaa Zara, she tries her best to steer clear of what’s branded as quintessential. She continues to have that attitude even in Bollywood. Talking about her choices, she says, “I feel that the concept of treading the path less travelled is embedded in my subconscious mind. I derive pleasure from attempting things that seem challenging and rare. I won’t say one doesn’t feel tempted towards conventional work, as it’s easier. However, eventually, it is about the artiste in you feeling satisfied, especially if you don’t want the monotony to seep in. That is the reason why I have been forging ahead with patience, as the characters I seek are few and far in between.”

She adds, “Like television, I want to take up characters that teach me something and help me grow as an artiste. The script will always be the dealmaker, followed by how crucial my character is and the scope of my performance.”

The actress will next be seen in Satish Kaushik’s Kaagaz 2. Talking about working with the veteran actor-filmmaker, who passed away due to a heart attack on March 9, says, “Bahut apnapan tha unme. He was so encouraging. He always told me I was a commercial actress and shouldn’t restrict myself to serious roles. He told me 100 per cent sekuch nahi hota, 150 per cent dena hota hai, nothing less. His childlike enthusiasm and passion for his craft set him apart. Even after launching so many faces, directing, producing, and acting in so many films, he was still passionate about his craft.”

By her admission, transitioning from TV to films wasn’t easy. While she says that she hasn’t quit television, she adds, “It’s been challenging to get the kind of work I want to do. Patiently waiting for the right project puts a strain on your finances. But, Bollywood has been welcoming so far and I am grateful. Thanks to the work that I have done, people have faith that I can be moulded into any character. A pleasant-looking face is an add-on.”
