Smoke visible from 'significant gorse blaze' in Ayrshire

PLUMES of smoke have been spotted among the hills between Largs and Skelmorlie amid a national wildfire warning.

Dramatic photos from Largs seafront show the billowing smoke overhead on Monday afternoon at 3pm.

There are unconfirmed reports of a "significant gorse blaze" over the back hills towards Skelmorlie.

Resident Robbie Stevenson, a member of Largs Community Council, says he could see plumes of smoke above the hills at Brisbane Glen.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has been contacted for information on the incident.

The recent spell of good weather has resulted in a number of wildfires across Scotland, including an ongoing blaze in South Ayrshire and the Galloway Forest.

People who live, work or visit rural areas are being urged to exercise caution.

Deputy assistant chief officer Bruce Farquharson, the SFRS wildfire lead, said: "Over the next few days in high risk areas, fires could burn and spread with very high intensity due to the weather conditions.

"We know how damaging wildfires can be to the environment, wildlife and nearby communities.

"We are asking people to act responsibly when enjoying the outdoors and please think twice before using anything involving a naked flame."
