Smoke billows over Cardiff with people advised to shut doors and windows

Large clouds of smoke could be seen across the east of Cardiff on Sunday morning as firefighters dealt with a large "deep-seated" refuse fire. Crews from Roath, Cardiff Central, and Maindee attended the blaze on land near Ipswich Road, off Newport Road near the Roath area of the city.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were in attendance at a large refuge fire and said that it was not affecting any nearby properties and there was currently no risk to the public. Two road appliances were in attendance. The service also posted a tweet warning people living in the area to keep windows and doors closed.

Photos from the scene show that the blaze was near OGN Crossfit Gym which had been sealed off by an emergency cordon as crews dealt with the fire on the land behind it. The fire started before 9:45am and nobody was injured as a result of it.
