Smoke billows into air as fire crews tackle blaze at scrapyard

Fire crews tackled a blaze at a scrapyard in Bolton this morning.

Residents who lived near to Raikes Lane were advised to keep their windows and doors shut after the fire broke out at around 5am. Five fire engines were scrambled to the scene.

Pictures showed a large plume of smoke billowing into the air from the blaze. The fire was brought under control 'quickly', the fire service said.

Plant machine drivers also worked to reduce the size of the scrap pile and limit the spread of the blaze. The area has now been dampened down and made safe.

An initial statement issued this morning by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Just after 5am this morning (9 July) firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a commercial premises on Raikes Lane, Bolton. Station Manager Ady Taylor added in a later statement: "In the early hours of this morning, we were called to reports of a fire at a commercial premises in Bolton. Thanks to the tireless work of our fire crews throughout this morning, this fire was brought under control quickly.

"Their swift actions contained the fire and minimised its impact on the scrapyard, enabling it to reopen today. I’d also like to thank the plant machine drivers for their assistance in reducing the size of the scrap pile, which helped our firefighting operations.

"Our firefighters have now dampened down the area to make it safe and have left the scene."
