Smoke billowing over town as firefighters called to incident

Smoke was seen billowing above Ilkeston after a fire broke out at a recycling centre. Multiple fire engines were called to the scene of the blaze on Wednesday night (April 26), which is understood to have started at Stanton Recycling at the Old Iron Works in Crompton Road at around 11.30pm.

Heavy smoke could still be seen on Thursday morning, April 27, after firefighters battled the blaze overnight. In an update issued on Thursday morning, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said fire appliances were expected to remain at the scene throughout the day.

"Update for Crompton Road, Ilkeston. We currently still have 2 appliances in attendance with 3 ground monitors in use. It is expected we will remain in on scene throughout the day," a spokesperson said.

Stanton Recycling has been approached for comment. A fire previously broke out at the centre in March 2021.

The fire service said in a statement last night: "We currently have 6 appliances and 1 Aerial Ladder Platform in attendance at a building fire on Crompton Road, Ilkeston. Residents in the area are advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke plume. This incident is likely to be protracted."
