Smith faces ban as Roosters brace for change again

Mark Nawaqanitawase is set for a Sydney Roosters reprieve after centre Billy Smith was handed a ban for his high tackle on Reece Walsh.

After winning his way back into the Roosters' backline, Smith was one of three players facing bans from the NRL's charge sheet on Saturday morning.

Broncos second-rower Jack Gosiewski has been hit with a grade-two high-tackle charge for his shot on Victor Radley, resulting in a one-game ban with an early plea.

That suspension will come as a blow to Brisbane's back-row stocks, given Brendan Piakura is also part way through a two-game ban from the NRL's review committee.

Gold Coast forward Brock Gray is also set to miss a week with a grade-two high-tackle charge for a hit on Jack de Belin in the Titans' loss to St George Illawarra.

Adding to Gray's pain is a $1500 fine also coming his way, after he was charged with a crusher tackle on Christian Tuipulotu in the same game.

But it is Smith's charge that will be of most interest.

The luckless centre had only just been brought back into first grade after hip and ankle issues, replacing Nawaqanitawase when he had a calf strain last week.

Nawaqanitawase then failed to regain his spot against Brisbane on Saturday night, with coach Trent Robinson leaving the rugby convert as 18th man.

But if Smith takes the one-match ban, it is most likely the former Wallaby will regain his spot in the centres.

Each of Smith, Gosiewski and Gray would risk missing a second match if they were to fight their charges at the judiciary and fail to have it downgraded or overturned.

Kotoni Staggs and Angus Crichton both avoided bans, with the Brisbane centre and Roosters second-rower able to take fines for dangerous contact.
