'Smart business' - Liverpool urged to buy Sadio Mane replacement from Bayern Munich for £34m

Ex-Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has urged his former club to make a move for Serge Gnabry to replace Sadio Mane this summer.

The ECHO understands Bayern Munich are preparing a third bid for Mane after having two offers already turned down as Liverpool hold out for close to £42.5m for their No.10.

Gnabry, who like the Senegalese star has 12 months left on his current deal and doesn't look like extending his stay with the German champions beyond his five years, can play in most of the positions across the front line, which could appeal to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

And Johnson, who played for Liverpool between 2009 and 2015, believes the Germany international's age and reported price tag would make him the perfect like-for-like replacement for Mane.

Speaking to bettingodds.com, Johnson said: “I think [Gnabry would] be a brilliant replacement for Mane.

“I really like him. I believe that’s a deal that Liverpool would look at more seriously because of the price and because of his age.

“That move would tick their criteria much more. That’s smart business.”

Liverpool have been busy so far this window, adding two signings to their ranks with Darwin Nunez following the path of Fabio Carvalho, who was brought in from Fulham after the Championship season had ended.

Gnabry has already played in the Premier League, having started his career at Arsenal and having had a loan spell at West Brom. Reports state he could be available for as little as £34m.

For Mane, if he us to leave Anfield, it will end his six-year stay on Merseyside, having completed a move from Southampton during Klopp's first summer in charge. He has gone on to score 120 goals for the club and win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.
