Two individuals were seriously injured on Monday morning when a small private plane crashed into a walking path near the Delaware County Regional Airport in Muncie, Indiana. According to airport officials, the incident occurred just before 10:30 a.m. when a single-engine Piper aircraft fell out of the sky while en route to the Muncie airport.
The victims, who were out walking on a trail near the airport, were struck either by the falling plane or by debris as the aircraft collided into the treeline surrounding the walking path. The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the plane, also sustained serious injuries and had to be extricated from the wreckage by first responders.
Reports indicate that the pilot, who was not local to Muncie, was attempting to land at the airport but crashed during the maneuver. Both the pilot and one of the pedestrians were transported to an Indianapolis hospital for further medical treatment.
Authorities expressed their condolences for the unfortunate incident, highlighting the unexpected nature of the event. The cause of the plane crash remains unknown, and investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are underway to determine the factors that led to the accident.
Delaware County Regional Airport officials noted that this was the first serious injury crash at the Muncie airport in over two decades, emphasizing the rarity of such incidents in the area.
