CHIANG MAI: A light earthquake of 3.6 magnitude was recorded in Fang district of this northern province early on Wednesday. No damage was reported.
Provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office chief Aroon Pinta said the northern meteorological office reported that the quake occurred at 1.03am with the epicentre about 4 kilometres deep in tambon Mae Kha in Fang district.
The tremor was felt in Fang and Chai Prakan districts. There had been no reports of damage.
Officials from Regional Irrigation Office 1 had examined four dams under its jurisdiction - Mae Ngat Somboon Chon Dam in Mae Taeng district, Mae Kuang Dam in Doi Saket district and Mae Thalop Luang Dam in Chai Prakan district of Chiang Mai, and Huay Mae Hong Son Dam in Muang district of Mae Hong Son. They were unaffected by the quake.
On Wednesday morning water levels in the Ping River and feeder streams were high because of the heavy rain that has fallen in the area.
In Chiang Mai township, the river at Navarat bridge was 3.11 metres deep, a little below the 3.70m spilling point. Residents had been warned to closely monitor the situation, Mr Aroon said.
