That’s all from me, thank you for reading and for your emails. Congratulations to both Romania and Slovakia. Until next time!
Here is the other match report from Group E:
Paul MacInnes's match report from Frankfurt
The fun doesn’t stop. Just under an hour to go until the late kick-offs in Group F. Our MBMs are live.
Group winners Romania will play either Slovenia or Netherlands in the last 16, but that has also yet to be decided.
Not a great look for the tournament.
And it’s full-time in the other match in this group! It finishes Ukraine 0-0 Belgium!
That means Ukraine are out, despite having four points, and Belgium will face France in the last 16! Eeeeeeeesh.
Slovakia will either face England or Spain. That is still to be decided.
Full-time: Romania 1-1 Slovakia
Both sides are through and both sets of players celebrate wildly on the pitch!
Updated
90+2 min: Unsurprisingly, both sides are showing little attacking verve. This game is petering out as a draw, which suits both sides.
More Slovakia subs: Norbert Gyomber and Matus Bero replace Ondrej Duda and Peter Pekarik. Duda was booked shortly before that change.
90 min: Three minutes added on here.
Pleased to say that Marek Hamsik, now retired of course, is still part of the Slovakia squad as part of the backroom staff. He’s lost the mohawk, though.
88 min: Yellow card for Puscas for a high boot on Skriniar. The forward is lucky he didn’t make better contact with the midriff of the PSG defender.
86 min: Romania’s goalscorer, Razvan Marin, is withdrawn for Rus, who is a centre back. I think that gives an indication of how enterprising Romania plan to be for the closing stages. That said, they do have a corner … which is booted over everyone in the middle and out for a goal kick.
84 min: The game has … slowed. Remember a draw means that both sides go through.
Updated
82 min: Hancko, who conceded the penalty earlier remember, is enjoying a fine finish to this game, dropping the shoulder to win another set-piece for Slovakia after a clumsy challenge from Marius Marin. But it’s a wasteful delivery.
80 min: Hancko perhaps a little unlucky not to get a free kick after nutmegging Ratiu on the byline. The Romania gave the Slovakian left back a little shove but not enough for the referee to blow.
78 min: Slovakia substitution – Duris replaces Ivan Schranz, who would have become only the ninth player ever to have scored in all three group games if he had netted today.
76 min: The first sign of timewasting as Romania keeper Nita takes his sweet time over a goal kick. Remember Romania are top of this group, as things stand. But so much can change in the final 15 minutes of both games. Slovakia also set to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. But a Ukraine goal changes everything.

1 | Romania | 3 | 1 | 4 |
2 | Belgium | 3 | 1 | 4 |
3 | Slovakia | 3 | 0 | 4 |
4 | Ukraine | 3 | -2 | 4 |
Incidentally, it’s still Ukraine 0-0 Belgium. The Belgians will play France in the last 16 if things stay like this.
74 min: Skriniar is the more illustrious centre back in Slovakia’s back line, and the PSG man has done well today, but his partner Vavro has also been outstanding. Plays for FC Copenhagen.
72 min: The rain eases. We should be able to play football properly now. I’ll shut up about the weather now.
Updated
70 min: Slovakia respond with two changes of their own. Tomas Suslov and Robert Bozenik replace David Strelec and Lukas Haraslin. The latter made a real impression in this second half.
The ball has now begun to stick on the surface. I can easily imagine a game-changing error coming from the conditions or the pitch.
68 min: Romania make a double change: George Puscas and Dennis Man replace Ianis Hagi and Denis Dragus. Think Hagi is unfortunate to come off. Puscas formerly of Reading, of course.
66 min: The pitch is resembling something of a slip and slide. It was already bobbly, now it’s sodden.
Updated
64 min: Two big chances for Slovakia! Strelec finds some space in Romania’s area and hits a low shot through the legs of Dragusin towards the near post. All of Nita’s momentum is going the wrong way but the keeper dangles a foot out and keeps it out.
Back come Slovakia! Next it is Haraslin that poses the threat, cutting in off the left wing and bending his shot juuuuuuuuuust wide of the Romania post. So close again.
Updated
62 min: Out of nowhere, a monsoon of rain has begun falling in Frankfurt! The players are getting absolutely soaked and the wind is driving the rain onto the supporters in the stands.
Updated
59 min: Back come Romania! Hagi nutmegs his marker on the edge of Slovakia’s box, lays the ball off to Razvan Marin, who hits a howitzer with almost no backlift. Dubravka saves and the rebounds falls to Dragus, who finds half a yard and curls his shot just over the bar! A yard over!
57 min: Romania make the first change: Coman off for Sorescu.
55 min: Lobotka continuing to pull the strings in midfield for Slovakia, who look the most likely to win this match.
53 min: Hagi is penalised for an aerial dual with Hancko, from which the Slovakia defender comes off worse. Iordanescu, the Romania manager, is yellow carded by the referee for his protestations at the decision.
51 min: Haraslin, so quiet in the first half for Slovakia, gets the better of Ratiu on his way to the Romanian byline. Haraslin checks back inside onto his right foot and ignores the options in the middle instead shooting through a crowd of players. Nita is again equal to it. Slovakia certainly the better side in these opening stages.
49 min: A miskick allows Hancko to get free on the left for Slovakia, he hooks a rather limp cross into the middle where Romania make a mess of their clearance. The ball balloons into the area and looks set to bounce just under the crossbar beforfe Nita takes it off the head of Strelec with a well-timed punch away, which the Romanian goalkeeper celebrates like a goal.
Peeeeeeeeep! We’re off again in Frankfurt.
Half-time reading:
Half-time: Slovakia 1-1 Romania
We’re all square, but nobody can say that either side have not been going for it.
“Wow, atmosphere, going for it, great game to watch”, emails Paper Roses.
45 min: Three minutes added on.
44 min: Romania’s Burca leaves one on Pekarik, who has been really effective going forward for Slovakia on that right flank. Another deep free kick but Dragusin gets it away.
42 min: Kucka has his pocket picked in midfield and suddenly Romania break in numbers. Dragus has options to his right but dribbles to the edge of Slovakia’s box, before bending a shot well wide. Should really have done better, Slovakia were struggling for numbers and Hagi was unmarked to Dragus’ right.
39 min: So, it’s as you were. All four teams on the same number of points, with both games currently drawn. Romania back on top.

GOAL! Slovakia 1-1 Romania (Razvan Marin pen 37)
What a spot kick! Marin belts the ball into the top left corner, with Dubravka helplessly diving the other way. I don’t think the Newcastle man would have got there even if he had guessed correctly.
Updated
Penalty to Romania!
It’s definitely a foul, but there were two contacts from Hancko on Hagi. One was outside the area and one was inside, before Hagi went over … the referee has VAR in his ear, and awards the penalty!
34 min: Penalty shout for Romania! Hagi has his first chance to have a run at Hancko and the Rangers winger draws the foul right on the edge of Slovakia’s box! The referee blows … for a free-kick, but the decision will go to VAR! A nervy wait for Slovakia!
Updated
33 min: Ratiu, Romania’s best player so far, tries his luck from range but the shot is straight at Dubravka. That was travelling though!
31 min: Lobotka, the Napoli dynamo, has been everywhere.
Updated
29 min: Romania look a little shell-shocked. They can’t seem to get their feet on the ball in midfield. It feels like Stanciu and Coman have barely had a kick.
26 min: A drinks break for both sides in the sweltering heat. A chance for Romania to regroup. Here what that goal does to the Group E table.

GOAL! Slovakia 1-0 Romania (Duda 24)
A simple but effective goal from Duda! Pekarik curls in a cross from right back towards Duda, who is completely unmarked between the two Romanian centre backs. It’s still a difficult chance with the Verona man falling backwards, but Duda springs and plants a wonderful header into the far corner from seven yards out!
Updated
21 min: Close for Slovakia! A deep, wide free kick is swung into the box. It misses a host of players in both yellow and blue, before Strelec just fails to poke the ball in at the back post! It glides wide.
18 min: Not a lot of fluency from either side. The pitch certainly isn’t helping, with pass-backs to the goalkeeper clearly bobbling along. Apparently neither side trained on this pitch yesterday, due to Uefa’s wishes.
15 min: Should be said that neither side look like they are currently playing for a draw. Which is a very good thing.
13 min: Romania win a free kick 40 yards from goal and Razvan Marin tries his luck, belting a shot that whizzes past the Slovakian wall and just wide of Dubravka’s right-hand post. Not a million miles away!
Updated
11 min: Romania respond! Ratiu, who finds himself at left wing, despite apparently playing right back, plays a neat one-two with Coman and bends his shot – a la Zaccagni – towards the top corner. But Dubravka is equal to it, palming it wide. Hagi latches onto the rebound but sends his shot high and wide. Had that been on target, Dubravka would have been struggling!
Updated
8 min: Slovakia lug a hopeful cross into the box, but it turns out to be a useful one with Schranz lurking at the back post. Remember the goal he scored against Ukraine in the same manner? But Bancu, Romania’s left back, stands his ground and is able to head behind for a corner, from which Slovakia’s Kucka – formerly of Watford – has a free header! It flies over, what a waste!
6 min: Lots of hustle, lots of bustle but no chances as yet. Sorry to say that the pitch does look like it’s cutting up in Frankfurt, as it has there in previous games.
4 min: A cracking little tackle by Hagi on the towering Slovakia centre back Skriniar as the PSG man saunters into midfield. A challenge much appreciated by Iordanescu, Romania’s manager.
2 min: The atmosphere is raucous, with Romanian fans edging it the stands. There is a pleasing synergy to the blue and yellow colour of the advertising hoardings for a certain German supermarket and that of the teams out on the pitch.

Peeeeeeeep! And we’re off in Frankfurt, where is a piping 30°C. The roof is open, unlike when I was there for England v Denmark last week.
“Whether he’s any cop or not aside, you have to admire the indestructible ego of someone happy to take the same shirt number as your dad, when he is seen as the greatest player the country has ever produced”, emails Graeme Neill.
Agreed. Not sure Hagi has a confidence issue, although despite his shirt number, he is not really operating as a classic No 10. Today Hagi will play right wing, while Stanciu and Razvan Marin will fulfill the attacking midfield roles.
The two sides are out in Frankfurt! It should be said that either side could possibly lose this game and still go through but a lot depends on results elsewhere if that is to happen. A reminder of the table, as it stands before kick off.

Whisper it, but Slovakia’s Ivan Schranz is joint top of the Golden Boot standings, with two goals.
Slovakia were unchanged for the first two matches but they make one here: forward David Strelec comes in to replace Robert Bozenik.
Romania make two changes from the side that lost 2-0 to Belgium: Hagi, son of Romania great Gheorghe, has been brought in to replace Dennis Man in a second attacking switch from coach Edward Iordanescu. I’m a little surprised at that: Man was not at his best in the last game but has had a great season with Parma, helping them back into Serie A.
Florinel Coman started the first game against Ukraine but was dropped for the Belgium clash, replaced by the pacy Valentin Mihaila. Coman comes back into the XI here at Mihaila’s expense.
Barry Glendenning is helming the other MBM in this group: Ukraine v Belgium. Interestingly neither Oleksandr Zinchenko nor Mykhailo Mudryk are in the Ukraine XI.
Stating the bleeding obvious here, but it should be said that this is a big deal for both nations. Romania have only qualified once for the last 16 in their five Euro appearances and that was in 2000. Regardless of whether they qualify as group winners or scrape through as one of the four best third-placed teams, this would represent a huge achievement for Edward Iordanescu and co.
If you don’t count Slovakia’s record as 1976 champions Czechoslovakia, they have only reached the Euros twice as an independent nation, including back in 2016 where they reached the knockouts before being dispatched by semi-finallists Germany 3-0 in the round of 16. If you do count Slovakia’s record as 1976 champions Czechoslovakia, and you probably should, this is their sixth appearance at the finals.

Preamble
Never before has a European Championship group had four teams all on three points after two games. But here we are.
Pos | Team | P | GD | Pts |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Romania | 2 | 1 | 3 |
2 | Belgium | 2 | 1 | 3 |
3 | Slovakia | 2 | 0 | 3 |
4 | Ukraine | 2 | -2 | 3 |
This means a few things, but the most pertinent for this game is thus: no matter what the result is between Belgium and Ukraine, if Slovakia v Romania ends in a draw, both will qualify for the knockout stage, with Slovakia finishing on four points, which will certainly be enough for them to finish as one of the four best third-placed teams.
This could be problematic, and there will doubtless be dissenting voices if the two teams play out a boring goalless draw to guarantee passage to the round of 16, but both head coaches of Slovakia and Romania have been falling over themselves that they will be trying to win the game.
Slovakia head coach Francesco Calzona: “We are professionals. We know that the draw might help us to qualify for the last 16, but that doesn’t mean anything because we want to play our own match. We deserve this opportunity to progress as we have played good football.”
Romania head coach Edward Iordanescu: “We want to win the group. If we win the group at least theoretically you have a certain advantage, especially in terms of extra rest days and also of the opponents. But the most important thing is to qualify, this is what our objective is.”
Hmmmm. Let’s hope for a belting game.
Kick-off: 5pm BST/6pm in Germany.
