Slimmers raise over £3000 for charity

Generous slimmers across West Lothian have raised £3475 for charity by donating clothes that no longer fit them.

Over 139 bags of clothes, shoes and accessories have been collected as part of the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw, held at Bathgate, Blackburn, Whitburn and Fauldhouse Slimming World groups.

Each of the filled bags is worth around £25.

Since 2013, Slimming World members have donated over £15m worth of pre-loved items to Cancer Research UK shops.

When the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw was last held before the pandemic in 2019, the event raised £3.2million for Cancer Research UK and €320,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.

Now the event, that invites Slimming World members to celebrate their weight losses by donating the clothes that no longer fit them (and that they know they’ll never need again!) – aims to raise desperately needed post-pandemic funds for our charity partners, Cancer Research UK and Irish Cancer Society.

A Slimming World spokesperson said: “Being overweight has been shown to increase the risk of developing cancer.

“Being overweight doesn’t mean that you’ll definitely develop cancer, but if you are overweight you are more likely to get cancer than if you are a healthy weight. Your exact risk will depend on lots of factors, including things you can’t change such as your age.

“Losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight could prevent around 22,800 cases of cancer every year in the UK, and reduce the risk of 13 types of cancer such as cancers of the breast, uterus, ovaries and gall bladder.

“Slimming World has supported Cancer Research UK since 2013 and has helped to raise more than £17 million for its work to create a world where everyone can live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.”
