'Slice of Premier League history' - Harry Kane steals headlines as Tottenham beat Brighton

Harry Kane was the toast of Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening as he helped the north Londoners to a 2-0 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion. The England forward netted with a typically predatory finish to secure three points after Cristian Romero gave his side the lead with a deflected effort.

Whilst Kane's goal was crucial in the way that it hauled Spurs to three points on the south Coast, it was also saw him reach a significant milestone having become the highest-scoring player away from home in Premier League history. In doing so, he moved ahead of former Manchester United man Wayne Rooney.

The win has helped alleviate some pressure on the Spurs squad after a loss against Man United at the weekend, but there is much work to be done if they are to qualify for the Champions League this season. Here is how the national media responded to Spurs' win against Brighton and of course Kane’s landmark goal:

THE GUARDIAN

Home might be where the heart is, but it is seemingly not where Harry Kane does his best work. Ninety-five goals and counting on the road in the Premier League, a second half-strike securing a crucial Tottenham victory at Brighton.

His side were already one to the good when Kane broke Wayne Rooney's away goals record, Cristian Romero having unwittingly grabbed his first since arriving in the summer before the break. Up to fifth on the overall list for Kane, one more than Frank Lampard, and just two behind Sergio Agüero's 180.

For how much longer he remains one of their own who knows. Kane might not himself have the answer, with much resting on Tottenham’s final Premier League standing. But while he remains in situ, the goals will flow and the fans will serenade him.

THE TELEGRAPH

A third victory in five Premier League away games for Tottenham Hotspur, enabled by a fluke from Cristian Romero and a classic Harry Kane finish. Kane’s strike was his 95th Premier League away goal and it meant he had overtaken Wayne Rooney’s record, 104 games earlier.

“I’m very happy,” said Kane’s manager Antonio Conte. “He is a world-class striker, but he’s starting to understand that the way this team plays, he’ll have chances every game. He’s really enjoying playing his football with us.”

Spurs overcame Brighton & Hove Albion, who have now lost their last six games, scoring just one goal along the grisly way. Spurs didn’t glitter, but they did show a new-found efficiency where old stagers such as Kane – who withstood some rather torrid treatment as Brighton’s frustrations grew - and Son Heung-Min are complemented by new men, from Romero to the livewire that was Rodrigo Bentancur, all shaped in Conte’s bustling but guileful image.

Now he has fully warmed up on the scoring front it is unwise to give Harry Kane too many chances.

Brighton got away with the first, Kane somehow, by his high standards, missing an early opening goal.

But the outcome was almost inevitable when he ran through on goal and was presented with a second.

Brighton would not be so lucky again.

Challenged, along with his other senior teammates to step up by Antonio Conte if Tottenham are to stand any chance of finishing in the top four, Kane eventually responded to clinch victory for Spurs.

He now has 22 club goals for the season with 15 of them coming under Conte. He is certainly doing his bit.

Ever the taskmaster, though, more can always be done if you play for Conte.

Thanks to Kane and an earlier, lucky goal from Cristian Romero, there was a victory to appease their demanding manager as Spurs' flip-flopping between wins and defeats continued.

THE INDEPENDENT

Harry Kane created a slice of Premier League history as he helped Tottenham Hotspur to a 2-0 win at free-falling Brighton and Hove Albion.

After Cristian Romero had put Spurs in front before the break, Kane entered the record books just before the hour by scoring his 95th goal away from home – more than any other player.

He also moved above Frank Lampard in the list of all-time scorers, going into fifth with 178 goals and more records are surely around the corner given the England’s captain devastating prowess.

It was his seventh strike in six Premier League games and helped keep Spurs in the race for the top four, though they remain big outsiders as they are still behind Arsenal, who have two games in hand.
