'Sleepless nights' - National media react to Arsenal's early Carabao Cup exit amid Brighton loss

Danny Welbeck inspired a Brighton comeback over Arsenal as the Gunners suffered an early exit from the Carabao Cup. The Seagulls booked a place in the fourth round with a 3-1 win over Mikel Arteta's side at the Emirates Stadium.

Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring in the first-half with a well taken effort before Welbeck equalised from 12-yards after he was brought down by Karl Hein. Then, against the run of play, Kaoru Mitoma put Brighton ahead in the second-half and left the north Londoners chasing a goal with half an hour to play.

Tariq Lampty eventually put the final nail in the coffin later in the half after slotting the ball through the legs of the on-rushing Hein. While Arsenal may not have been at their strongest, Brighton continued their great vein of form under new boss Roberto De Zerbi.

So, with that being said, football.london have collated the national media's reaction to the Gunners early exit from the Carabao Cup.

The Mirror

"After starring in the hammering of Nottingham Forest, Reiss Nelson once again maintained his push to be handed more game-time," the Mirror said. "He lined up on the left wing and played a pivotal role in Arsenal's opening goal.

"Nelson picked up a loose ball in his own half before sprinting through the Brighton defence and playing in Nketiah to finish. Given the accusations Arteta has faced about overplaying Bukayo Saka, Nelson proved once again that he could be an option on the wing.

"He terrorised Joel Veltman, completing all of his attempted dribbles and winning both of his attacking duels in the first-half. The winger could certainly be key when Arteta comes to rotating his side when the games begin to pile up in the second half of the season."

The Daily Mail

"This was not how Mikel Arteta wanted to sign-off from the Emirates for the next few weeks," the Daily Mail wrote. "Not for a while has there has been much reason for Arsenal supporters to grow irritable and impatient here - nine straight home victories have underpinned their brilliant campaign.

"They had, in fact, amassed 12 consecutive wins here, stretching back to April. The last visiting team to leave these parts victorious? Brighton."

The Guardian

"There will be few sleepless nights at Arsenal over this result and, as their fans were keen to point out, first place in the Premier League is a bigger attraction than Carabao Cup progress," the Guardian wrote. "But Mikel Arteta will still be frustrated by defeat to an alert, bold Brighton team who responded superbly to going behind and have a bright future if a young side’s performance is any measure.

"Finding fundamental problems with Arsenal seems spectacularly nitpicky these days but, if anything, the outcome bore out the impression they are walking a tightrope in terms of squad depth."
