'Slates hurled at cars' as man climbs on roof and 'demands money'

Slates were reportedly hurled from a roof this morning as a man "demanded money".

Emergency services were forced to cordon off a quiet residential road as a man sitting on top of scaffolding attached to a roof refused to get down for three hours today in the pouring rain. Merseyside Police confirmed officers were called to Sefton Street in Southport at around 9.30am on Monday, November 21.

Officers were forced to cordon off a portion of the road where it met Virginia Street as they liaised with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service in an attempt to get the man down safely.

One man, who returned home from doing the shopping, told the ECHO that the man had been “throwing tiles off the roof and demanding money” with another neighbour saying that he was telling people to "f*** off" during the standoff with police. Two cars and a white van were seen with smashed windscreens and damage to wing mirrors.

A statement issued by Merseyside Police confirmed that a man in his 50s was sectioned under the Mental Health Act. The statement said: "We can confirm officers attended a report of concern for the safety of a man in his 50s who was on top of scaffolding in Southport.

"Officers attended Sefton Street at around 9.30am and put a containment on the building as a precaution while officers engaged with the man. He came down at around 12.30pm and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act."

An NWAS spokesperson told the ECHO: "We were called to a concern for welfare incident following a call at 09.39. We have taken a patient to hospital."
