Skyscanner reveals best value flights for Brits - including Madeira and France

Flights to a beautiful Portuguese island and an Australian city are the biggest inflation busters of the past year, according to new research.

If you've booked a holiday in recent months, then odds on you'll know that trips away are not cost-of-living proof.

Inflation is running high in most countries, meaning holidays there are getting more expensive.

Air travel is similarly affected, with fares in the first week of August up 30% on average for the top 36 routes compared with pre-pandemic levels, according to Kayak data.

While different airlines offer different prices, averaged out some routes have become a lot pricier.

Happily for those looking to escape these drizzly shores, the price of some routes has gone in the opposite direction.

Naomi Hahn, vice president of strategy at Skyscanner, said: “It is clear that we’re hungrier than ever to discover something new – even though we might have less in our pockets next year. The aftermath of a pandemic has made travellers look for ways to make up for lost time and create new experiences and memories.

“Consumers have become savvier to value post pandemic – the squeeze on personal spending has shown that consumers will still prioritise getting away but are increasingly shopping around on metasearch platforms like Skyscanner and employing simple travel hacks to ensure they get the most for their money, like being flexible in terms of dates and destination.

"The year looks set to be a year of new discoveries as emerging, pocket friendly destinations come to the fore.”
