Skylar Thompson believes he’s done everything he can to make the team

For any player, especially a rookie taken in the late rounds, their goal is to make the regular season roster and have a chance to impact games when it matters.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson has those same aspirations. As a seventh-round selection from Kansas State, Thompson had a lot of work to do this offseason and preseason if he wanted to be considered for a roster spot in 2022 rather than a place on the practice squad, and he’s been rather impressive.

The former Wildcat believes he’s put enough together to trust the coaches’ decision.

“I think I’ve done everything I can do in my control,” Thompson said. “I really appreciate my teammates doing a great job of playing for me. Going out there, guys are making plays for me, blocking me, protecting me, allowing me to be at my best. That’s what I’m most grateful for, just getting the opportunity to go out and play this game at this level. That’s what I’ve been dreaming about my whole life, and all the other stuff is out of my control. I just try to have fun and put the team first in everything I do and control the things I can do.”

Thompson, in three preseason games, has thrown for the seventh-most passing yards (450), the most passing touchdowns (five) and the fewest interceptions (none) while completing the second-highest percentage of passes (75%) and earning the best quarterback rating (138.4).

If that play isn’t deserving of a roster spot, it’s hard to imagine what is. Thompson would likely get scooped up on waivers if Miami did try to sneak him onto the practice squad.
