Sky warns Brits of massive change to Netflix subscriptions

Users of Sky TV are being alerted to a change that will affect their Netflix viewing habits starting next month.

For a considerable amount of time, Sky has included the Basic Netflix plan in its bundles, saving customers from having to sign up for several subscriptions and only paying a single monthly fee.

When Netflix started offering bundles with its Basic Netflix plan, Sky customers could enjoy box sets, films, documentaries, comedy and drama series without having to deal with adverts.

But now that Netflix has discontinued the Basic Netflix plan option, Sky customers are forced to switch to a new service, which regrettably does include adverts.

Sky said: "Important updates to your Netflix plan. We wanted to let you know that Netflix has discontinued their Netflix Basic plan. As a result, the Netflix plan included with your Sky subscription will automatically change to Netflix Standard with ads."

This implies that a variety of adverts will now be shown to consumers both before and during their viewing.

However, there are some additional benefits to this.

Standard with advertising offers HD quality and allows customers to view on several devices simultaneously. Additionally, Sky guarantees that "advertisements will run during natural plot breaks for a seamless experience, with no ads running on kids’ profiles".

This move will impact all Sky Glass and Sky Stream subscribers who are currently enrolled in an Ultimate TV bundle with Netflix Basic.

Although a specific date has not been announced, Sky has stated that it would take effect automatically in September, so there is not much longer to take advantage of ad-free access.Nothing will change if you recently signed up for Sky because you will already be on the Netflix Standard plan with advertisements.

It isn’t just Sky TV impacted by this change, EE TV will also remove Netflix Basic Plan for all new customers.

Along with Netflix and EE, Virgin Media also offers TV bundles that contain Netflix; however, it no longer offers Netflix Basic as of July, when that membership tier was no longer available to new users.
