Sky Sports unwittingly interview former Everton player about Liverpool on Wembley Way

A Sky Sports News reporter appeared to quiz a former Everton player ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup victory on Saturday and without knowing who he was.

The incident happened on Wembley Way, just hours before the Reds defeated Chelsea to win the competition for the first time in 16 years. A penalty shootout was needed to separate the two teams, with Kostas Tsimikas scoring the winning spot kick.

The player in question is believed to be Peter Clarke. Although this hasn't been confirmed, the man interviewed by Sky Sports is a spitting image of the former Everton defender and fans on social media are convinced it's him.

Clarke, who is from the Merseyside town of Southport, came through the ranks at Goodison Park in the nineties and made 14 appearances for the Toffees before pursuing a long and successful career in the EFL. He's still playing professionally aged 40.

The defender remarkably played 50 games for League Two outfit Tranmere Rovers this season and has wracked up more than 900 professional appearances to date. He's played for 10 clubs in total - most notably Blackpool, Southend United and Huddersfield Town.

Despite this, it appears he wasn't famous enough to be recognised on Wembley Way. A man, believed to be Clarke, and his two kids answered questions from a Sky Sports reporter before going on to watch Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties.

It's not the first time a footballer hasn't been recognised by a TV reporter. At the Canadian Grand Prix in June 2018, Sky Sports presenters Martin Brundle and Ted Kravitz didn't realise who Hector Bellerin was, with Kravitz calling him a "hipster".

Tranmere are currently negotiating a new contract with Clarke, whose existing deal expired at the end of the season. Speaking to The Athletic in January, the veteran defender revealed the secret to his longevity. "You need to have fortune with injuries," he said.

"The two guys I mentioned there were defenders and the fact that you could still see them playing and training and being out there at the age they were inspired me... I have always had that level of hunger and want, which is half the battle.

"Couple that with knowledge and that helps. Maybe giving up red meat and dairy have helped. I feel better for it. Over time, you learn what your body needs and doesn’t need. It is ice baths, hydration, food, massages, recovery tights - I spend most of my time dressed in Lycra.

"Over a large number of years, you pick up different things and work out what works for you and what doesn’t. You try to keep on top of your nutrition and hydration. There is a big emphasis on recovery after games but there are lots of little things that come together that help the overall picture.

“"he food I eat is not always the greatest tasting or nicest looking, but it is fuel. It is needed to fuel the body through recovery and to be ready to train and play."
