Sky Sports' Kelly Cates 'nervous' to start dating in mid-40s after split from husband

Sky Sports host Kelly Cates has revealed she is daunted about dating again in her mid-40s after splitting from her husband.

The daughter of football legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has separated from TV producer Tom Cates and is now finalising her divorce.

They were married in 2007 and have two daughters aged nine and 12.

Glasgow-born Kelly, 45, told how she is nervous about being single again as she doesn’t think people will find her attractive.

She also said she is reluctant to go on dates with strangers because she doesn’t want her time wasted.

Kelly added: “I don’t have a picture in my head of why a middle-aged, slightly overweight, mother-of-two could possibly be attractive.”

The presenter, who also currently works for Radio 5 Live, said her dating options had been limited in recent months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

And she joked she may have to get somebody else to write her profile on dating websites to avoid putting potential dates off.

Speaking to fellow sports presenter Gabby Logan on The Mid Point podcast, Kelly added she does not want to spend her precious free time with a random person.

She said: “Imagine going out with somebody and you sit there halfway through and think, ‘God, this guy’s an idiot’. You’ve just wasted a babysitter.

“I’m making myself sound completely unpickable.”

The broadcaster started at Sky in 1998 after quitting her maths degree at Glasgow University.

She went on to work for the BBC and continues to do so on Radio 5 Live, as well as ITV, Setanta, TalkSport, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

She returned to Sky in 2016.
