The end of the iconic Sky satellite dish moved another step nearer today (Tuesday, October 18) with the launch of new TV box, as the media giant swapped the airwaves in favour of streaming.
The new Sky Stream device is being offered without a lengthy contract for the first time. The Stream device plugs into the back of the television, eliminating the need for a pricey installation. Doing away with the satellite dish will now mean that Sky is putting all its efforts into using the household WiFi.
It is a move, says Sky, that will attract those who do not like the sight of a dish on the side of their house and it will appeal to renters who are not allowed to have dishes erected.
According to the company, it will be the most affordable way to get Sky TV and Netflix together, costing less than a £1 a day.
Potential customers are being offered various packages, including an 18-month contract, for which subscribers can get Sky Ultimate TV and Netflix Basic for £26 a month. Those who prefer a 30-day rolling contract, the cost will be £29 a month. The set-up fee is £20 on a contract and £39.95 without one. The company is also offering deals for those wanting extra devices in their homes.
The Sky Stream product builds on the firm's Sky Glass service, which launched last year. It uses the same system, which is regularly updated.
"It's got all the same smart features, all the things you love, like restart, universal search, playlist features. . ." said Liz Wynn, Sky's Managing Director for TV.
