A SKY News host has been called out after appearing to incorrectly refer to the SNP as the “Scottish nationalist party”.
Presenter Gareth Barlow was reporting on the news that former first minister Nicola Sturgeon had announced she was to split from her husband – former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell.
While reporting, Barlow appeared to initially refer to the SNP correctly, as the Scottish National Party, before correcting himself.
It’s the Scottish National Party, not the Scottish Nationalist Party. https://t.co/INx6RpjydU

He said: “This is an Instagram post from Nicola Sturgeon, the former leader of the Scottish National Party, nationalist party.”
A number of people took to Twitter/X to correct Barlow ,with Scots singer and the rector-elect of the University of Aberdeen Iona Fyfe saying: “It’s the Scottish National Party, not the Scottish nationalist party.”
A number of other pro-independence accounts also replied to the clip saying that Barlow should not have referred to the SNP as the “nationalist party”.
The mistake mirrors a common refrain from former Tory prime minister Boris Johnson, who was admonished by the Commons Speaker over his insistence on calling the SNP the wrong name.
Sturgeon announced her split from Murrell in a post on Instagram on Monday morning.
In a post headed “personal,” the MSP wrote: “With a heavy heart I am confirming that Peter and I have decided to end our marriage.
“To all intents and purposes we have been separated for some time now and feel it is time to bring others up to speed with where we are.
“It goes without saying that we still care deeply for each other, and always will.
“We will be making no further comment.”
