Sky News' Dermot Murnaghan signs off with classic Anchorman quote in final show

Sky News presenter Dermot Murnaghan signed off his final show after 15 years with a classic Anchorman quote.

The broadcaster has been part of Sky News for 15 years and anchored his final show at 7pm on Tuesday.

Saying goodbye to viewers at home, he said: "After 15 years, this has been my final programme for Sky News, the best organisation in the UK, which you already know, for its coverage and analysis but also for its dedicated and inventive hard-working staff so many of who have become close friends.

"Thanks to all of you for putting up with me and supporting me so resolutely through elections, resigning prime ministers. My greatest thanks goes to you the viewers who make Sky News, you are Sky News."

He added: "Your engagement, encouragement and feedback have been invaluable. I hope I've managed to serve you well. It has been an absolute privilege and thanks for making this career so worthwhile."

Dermot threw his papers in the air and referenced Anchorman (Sky News)

Dermot went on to throw his papers in the air behind him before referencing Will Ferrell's movie Anchorman with: "You stay classy, planet Earth!"

In the Anchorman movie, Will's character Ron Burgundy signed off each of his news shows by saying: "You stay classy San Diego!"

Dermot, who has also worked with BBC News and ITN, was the presenter on weekday evenings for the last few years.

He also fronted a Sunday morning programme called 'Murnaghan'.

It's not the first time a broadcaster has used the iconic line from Anchorman to sign off their final shows.

Andrew Marr recently signed off his 21-year career at the BBC using the same phrase.

The presenter, who previously said he was looking forward to regaining his 'own voice' outside of the BBC's rules, presented his last show in December 2021.

"I have been so lucky and so privileged to share so many Sunday mornings with you," he told viewers.

"I have been wondering how to close this final show, but I can’t do better than quoting my great mentor: ‘You stay classy, San Diego.’"

His last programme included a highlights reel of his time on the show, which included interviews with Prince Harry, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama.
