Sky introduces £5 charge to skip past adverts

Sky has issued a warning to its customers that a charge will be implemented if they intend on skipping adverts.

The media giant announced the new charge last year, with some televisions receiving the update from November 29. It means that an extra £5 will be added to bills for fast forwarding through live channels such as ITV, Sky Atlantic, Sky Max, Channel 4, Channel 5, and MTV.

Those affected by the new charge (and ar outside their initial contract term) can look at better Sky deals and renegotiate a new Sky Glass or Sky Stream deal that won't include the £5 extra cost. For example, if you already have Sky Q in your home, then you'll still be able to skip ads without any extra fees, the Express reports.

Furthermore, anyone with Sky Glass TV is also protected from the bill hike for 18 month as as the ability to skip ads is free for entirety of their minimum contract term. Despite this, if you happen to purchase a Sky Glass or the new Stream box after today, you will need to add the 'Ad Skipping Add On pack" to your subscription.

However, it's also important to note that people with or without the ad on will still be able to pause a live show and fast fowards during ad breaks until they rech the live stream again. Explaining more about the feature, Sky said: "With the Ad Skipping Add On, you'll be able to fast forward through adverts when using Live Pause, Restart, Playlist or Sky On Demand.

"You can also fast forward adverts from within ITVX, STV Player and All4 TV apps. The Ad Skipping Add On doesn't mean that you won't see any adverts. It allows the ability to fast forward through the ads using the relevant remote control buttons and on screen menu for what you're watching.

"The Ad Skipping Add On doesn't include other apps, like YouTube or Spotify."
