Skullcandy SLYR Pro review: excellent value wired gaming headset with impressive audio

Skullcandy has re-entered the gaming market and launched three different headsets to suit every budget.

I’ve been testing the mid-range plug and play wired-only model SLYR Pro which costs €99.99 and is compatible with all platforms: Playstation, Xbox, PC, Mac and mobile.

SLYR Pro comes in three colours - black, blue and green - although it is primarily black in all cases, with the colour changes affecting only the inside of the earcups and headband.

Despite the relatively light 276g weight, the robust build quality of the headset is to be applauded.

SLYR Pro key features

The cans have 50mm drivers and comfortable ear cups, two crucial factors.

The former helps make them sound better than most gaming headsets which cost less than €100 and the latter means you can wear them for hours on end.

Audio is rich and deep, with solid bottom-end and crisp mids and tops, and notably sharp separation when listening to music.

But it’s when you are playing games that SLYR Pro really shines.

The headset is perfectly suited for modern games and their multidirectional audio soundtracks - sounds that are supposed to be behind you genuinely sound like they're behind you.

You can customise the EQ if using with the compatible mobile app or PC software. But I found the default tuning had plenty of bass and treble and made games seem bright and lively.

There’s a detachable boom microphone with impressive voice pick-up, both for calls and recording. It uses Clear Voice AI to isolate your voice and remove unwanted background sounds.

One neat feature for it is Sidetone, which demonstrates what you sound like to everyone else. It’s easy to turn on and off.

Detachable mics are great because they let you use the headset as a traditional set of headphones.

Other features

The headset has a dial tucked away on the left-hand side which lets you control the volume.

Tapping the left earcup will mute the microphone.

Verdict

On the whole, SLYR Pro is an excellent value for money gaming headset that is comfortable to wear for long periods and delivers pleasing audio quality.
