The Hobart Hurricanes need 138 runs to defeat the Sydney Sixers after their spinners masterminded a fightback in the rain-affected Big Bash clash at the SCG.

The Sixers won the toss and chose to bat first in Thursday night's game, which was delayed by an hour and condensed to 14 overs a side.

Kurtis Patterson and Josh Philippe appeared primed to bat the Sixers to their first victory of the summer with a speedy 68-run opening partnership after both were given an extra life by some sloppy Hurricanes fielding.

But the pair were dispatched in consecutive overs just as the Sydneysiders looked set to capitalise on their fine form by taking the power surge.

From there, ex-Sixer Shadab Khan (2-32) and overnight sensation Paddy Dooley (2-19) triggered a collapse, before Hayden Kerr (32) and James Vince (19no) breathed new life into the home side's quest for victory.

The Sixers lost 3-2 immediately after Patterson (38) and Philippe (43) went, with Moises Henriques, Dan Christian and Jordan Silk all falling to the Hurricanes' tweakers without scoring.

It marked captain Henriques' second golden duck from as many outings.

Khan more than made up for spilling Philippe from his own bowling earlier in the innings; he snared Philippe with a length ball that the opener belted to Asif Ali at long off and then caught and bowled Henriques off his next delivery.

In only his fourth game, Dooley was once again the pick of the Hobart bowlers after taking 4-16 in the side's last outing.

He spoiled Silk's 100th BBL appearance, bowling him for a golden duck as he attempted to block, before enticing Christian into edging to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

Vince and Kerr only managed six runs from their power surge but belted Riley Meredith for 18 in a final over that featured two wides and a no ball to help the Sixers finish at a respectable 6-137.
