Six Scottish beaches named amongst best in the UK with excellent water quality

SIX Scottish beaches have been named amongst the best in the UK where only those with excellent water quality were considered.

The Sunday Times Best UK Beaches guide listed the 50 top beaches in Britain based on factors ranging from water quality to natural beauty and the area’s infrastructure.

Topping the list of the six Scottish beaches is Gullane Bents in East Lothian.

The mile-and-a-half curve of golden sand could easily be mistaken for a beach in the Mediterranean but instead boasts stunning views of the Edinburgh skyline and the Fife coast.

If you’re lucky you might even be able to see the wrecks of two submarines at low tide at Aberlady Bay.

Second on the list is Balmedie, in Aberdeenshire, where the golden beach stretches more than 13 miles from the Ythan Estuary at Newburgh to Don in the Granite City.

A popular spot for swimmers and paddle boarders, it’s no wonder its golden dunes and stunning ocean views make the list.

Third on the list is Findhorn, in Moray, and it is a long flat beach which is popular with paddlers and dolphin watchers.

It also has a line of colourful beach huts where you can watch some spectacular sunsets from.

The other three beaches which make the list are Achmelvich, Mellon Udrigle, and Sanna, all located in the Highlands.

The top six Scottish beaches:

  • Gullane Bents, East Lothian
  • Balmedie, Aberdeenshire
  • Findhorn, Moray
  • Achmelvich, Highlands
  • Mellon Udrigle, Highlands
  • Sanna, Highlands
