An alert has been issued to consumers concerning a six-pack of popular beer sold across Ireland over allergen fears.
Desperados is warning that its Original Beer flavoured with Tequila could be unsafe for some consumers.
The company says that while the outer packaging of the product is labelled correctly, the individual bottles are not in English.
As the beer contains barley, it could be "unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of cereals containing gluten".
The six-back of Desperados beers are the only products subject to the allergen alert and the other pack sizes are not impacted.
The beer is widely sold in shops, supermarkets and off-licenses across Ireland, including Tesco and SuperValu.
The Desperados Original Beer flavoured with Tequila contained in the alert has a pack size 6 x 330ml bottles.
Two batches are impacted by the notice: batch code 1356528H with a best before date of December 2022 and batch code 1334528S with a best before date of November 2022.
An alert about the allergen concerns was issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland on Thursday.
The FSAI said: "The outer packaging of Desperados Original Beer flavoured with Tequila six pack is labelled correctly, however the individual bottle labels of the above batches are not labelled in English.
"The product contains barley and therefore this may make the affected batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of cereals containing gluten (barley)."
Heineken, which manufactures the product, said in a statement: "On February 2, 2022, Heineken Ireland identified a situation regarding the mislabeling of two batches of Desperados multipack beer 6x33cl bottles.
"The outer selling unit of the 6 pack are labelled correctly with clear allergen information pertaining to the malted barley ingredient, but the bottles inside were mislabeled in a foreign language meaning the allergen information may be unclear on individual bottles.
"In line with its commitment to transparent labelling, Heineken Ireland notified the Food Safety Authority (FSAI) and is withdrawing the small number of impacted batches (1,000 cases) from retailers.
"A further unsold 8,000 cases are held in our depot and will not be released for sale."
