Attorney Malik Shabazz expressed his thoughts on the sentencing of the officers involved in the January 2023 torture and abuse case of two Black men. While he acknowledged the significance of today's sentencing, he also mentioned his desire for longer prison terms for the defendants.
Shabazz stated during a news conference that although they would have preferred additional years added to the sentences, they respect the court's decision. He emphasized the importance of respecting the judgement and wisdom of the court, noting that Mississippi has spoken on the matter.
The six officers received varying prison sentences on Wednesday in state court, with additional time ranging from 15 to 45 years. It was specified that all state sentences would run concurrently with their federal sentences.
